Our Sailing Rig

Our sailing rig on a 14ft Vermont Fishing Dory

Whether it was the Polynesians in their ocean-going proas, the Chinese in their sampans or the Spanish Armada trying to sink the British navy, as long as humans have been taking to the water we have been attempting to capture the wind to do our bidding. Sailing in canoes has a long and colorful history. In the history of Adirondack guideboating, however, sailing has been most rare. Hallie Bond, the curator of boats at the Adirondack Museum, is fascinated by a very old sailing Adirondack guideboat which Steve personally owns. Steve bought the boat for a song and Hallie would love to have it as a part of the Museum's collection.
We came upon the idea of putting sails on our boats in conversations with customers and folks at shows. Over and over we were hearing the same request, "Do you make a sailing rig that could go on your boat?"
Finally,  the answer has become, yes, we do.
The rig Steve designed is called a "high-aspect balanced lug." To adapt it to our boats he opted for leeboards rather than a dagger board. The rigger deck clamps onto the gunwales in 4 locations. Probably it takes an hour to set the boat up for the first time....likely 20 minutes after that.

The sailing rig on a 12ft Vermont Packboat..

This is the rigger-deck. It clamps to the gunwales in four locations.

The leeboards, mast-step, mast and rigging lines all attach to the rigger deck.

It will fit on any of our boats....though probably it will work best on the dory. Two adults can go in either the guideboat or dory....a smaller sailing rig fits onto the packboat...but that's strictly a solo affair.
    The rig includes
  • mahogany & butternut lee boards
  • mahogany & butternut rudder
  • brass, stainless and aluminum hardware
  • a 45 sq ft sail (32ft for the packboat)
  • 9ft spruce mast
  • cherry rigger deck

It sells for $2,000 complete and can be adapted to our existing boats. If we modify the existing boat the charge will be $100....or you or a shop local to you can do the work yourselves.
