Repair & Restorations
The good news is....mostly our boats don't require repair. Usually the biggest hassle in having your boat repaired it getting it to us. Or getting your boat back to you once it's been fixed. Pretty much we just have to deal with these issues on a case-by-case basis. Normally we delight in showing you beautiful photos of our boats. The photos which follow aren't pretty....but they all led to happy outcomes.
This was a boat left untied on a dock on the St Lawrence River....it slid into the water, floated down the river a bit and sat in a rocky cove all night long. The wave action on the river lifted and dropped the boat ....who knows?.....a million times? 10 million times? Those hammer blows wore a hole in the hull.
Unfortunately we didn't take a photo after the boat was repaired....but it looked like a new boat. Maybe it weighed 4 lbs more. We patched the hull, repaired the blackcoat and painted the interior and exterior. Total cost? $500
This boat required more of a restoration than a repair.
This deck became.......
This deck....
And this boat.....
Became this boat.
We sanded and oiled the gunwales, replaced the seats and floorboards and painted the interior. Total cost: $800.
This following repair could have been avoided with our skidplates. The abrasion went through the hull (if you look closely you can see the layers of cloth that were worn through.) After draining water from the airtanks, we patched the hole in the hull and then install skidplates. Price for the repair, $100, price for the skidplates, $150.
Before....
After
These results were obtained with a product called Vert-Glas. A customer sent these photos of his boat....before and after applying the Vert-Glas. If you'd like to try it, it's available from marinesource.com . The kit is about $80. It seems easy enough to apply .....but it is time-consuming. We'll offer the treatment, say, $300 for our 12ft boat, $400 for the 14 and 15-ft boats. Primarily we repair our own boats. Occasionally we will repair a traditionally built guideboat....but mostly that applies to boats in such decline that fiberglass and epoxy are what is required to bring them back. These restorations can be lovely but they are last ditch efforts. We occasionally repair composite guideboats built by others.
For traditional guideboat repair we recommend Rob Frenette in Tupper Lake, NY. He owns Racquette River Outfitters and can be reached at 518 359 3228 or rro@adelphia.net. Jim Cameron in Lake Clear, NY, also does lovely work, (518) 327-3470.
