12-ft Vermont Packboats

At 12-ft and 46 lbs, our Vermont Packboat is light, fast, safe, sea-worthy and easy to row. It is a smaller cousin to our Adirondack guideboat. The boat is light enough for most women to carry, solo fishermen who will be carrying the boat to wilderness lakes will also appreciate its light weight and compact hull. It has 3 seats and will carry one good-sized adult, or two medium sized adults or one adult and one or two smallish children. Recommended carrying capacity 300 lbs +/-

As you will see in the photo below, it has quite a unique hull shape. As a rule of thumb, flat bottomed boats are stable (but hard to move through the water), round bottomed boats are fast (but difficult to keep upright.)
This boat has rounded aspects, flat aspects and angled aspects, all of which combine to produce a fast, seaworthy boat.
The sharp edges on each side are called 'chines.' As sharp as they are, they are called 'hard chines.' A new boat that we are developing (our 14-ft Vermont Fishing Dory) has the same hard chines but is a substantially larger boat. Note: when there are people in the boat, the chines are down in the water, biting in and giving the boat its seaworthiness.

This blending of qualities yields a civilized 'ladies boat' ......and a boat ready to take on Puget Sound in a gale. (For those photos, click here.)
