Cedar Guideboats

For a century and a half these boats have been taken to be the highest example of the boat-builder's art. An ordinary fishing boat, a hunting boat, a hauling boat; it was a boat one man could carry a distance and row for a week. The boats evolved upward, lighter, faster, prettier, easier to row. The guides were in pursuit of game, but they were also in pursuit of the cash customer. The stories a guide might tell, the game or fish his 'sport' might bag, the meal he might cook, they were all part of what brought the sport back year after year. The beauty and grace of the guide's boat was also part of the wilderness experience.

We blend contemporary materials and techniques with the traditional form of the guideboat. In designing our boats, Steve says that he borrowed the ends of the boat from Rushton, the middle from Grant. He then smoothed everything to his own sensibility. The woods are carefully selected and jointed one to the  next. The exterior of our wooden boat is covered with a protective layer of nearly invisible fiberglass. Strong, elegant, beautiful....if given a modest degree of care, each boat is designed to last many lifetimes.

We build these boats in the sequence in which they are ordered. On occasion we have a wooden boat in stock, other times the wait can be 4 to 6 months, depending on the season. We ask for a 50% deposit when you place your order. The balance is due when we finish working on your boat. (If you would like us to hold delivery till spring, we are happy to oblige. However, we will still require payment when we finish working on your boat.) Order early, plan ahead.  If you would like to phone or e-mail your order and then drop a check in the mail, that would be quite satisfactory. We also accept Visa/MC/AMEX. Discover
